What are Uterine Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are growths on the uterine wall. They are usually found in women during their childbearing years and are non-cancerous. Depending on the location of their growth within the uterus, fibroids can be further classified into several types:
Subserosal fibroids
Usually grow on the outside of the uterus. May grow larger and put pressure on neighbouring organs, causing pressure symptoms.
Intramural fibroids
Normally grow within the uterus. They are the most common types of fibroids.
Submucosal fibroids
Grows underneath the lining of the uterus, which may crowd into the uterine cavity.
Transmural fibroids
These grow in the inside of the uterus, spanning the entire uterine wall.
Pedunculated fibroids
Usually grow on a stalk on the outside of the uterus.
Based on the location and size of the fibroids, you may experience varying symptoms. The most common ones include:
- Heavy and / or prolonged menstrual bleeding
- Bloating
- Abdominal pain
- Changes in urinary and / or bowel habits
- Backache or leg pain

Fibroid Removal and Management Options
While most fibroids do not require treatment, you may wish to remove yours if they are larger than 4cm, or are causing you pain or discomfort. The recommended treatment depends on the size and type of your fibroids, and the symptoms you experience.
Fibroid removal treatment options include:
Medication
Your gynae may prescribe medications to manage the symptoms caused by fibroids. They either control the amount of menstrual blood flow, or relieve any menstrual pain you may experience. New medication is also available now to reduce the size of fibroids and treat them medically.
Surgery
Should you wish to remove your fibroids surgically, you can choose between:
Myomectomy
This procedure only removes the fibroids, leaving your uterus intact. Women who wish to bear children in the future may prefer this option, but run the risk of recurring fibroids.
Hysterectomy
This procedure removes the uterus from your body. Although you will not be able to bear any children after this procedure, the fibroids will also not recur.
