Raffles Cancer Screening

Early Detection and Prompt Intervention

Lifestyle modifications are pivotal in reducing cancer risk factors. However, there are still many cases that originate from factors beyond individual control, such as genetic predisposition, environmental influences, and ageing.

In Singapore, a significant proportion of cancer cases are diagnosed at advanced or metastatic stages. Therefore, active screening initiative seeks to tackle the need for early detection and prompt intervention.

FAQ

Early-stage cancer may not show symptoms. Screening tests are vital as they can find abnormalities or cancerous changes before symptoms appear. Early detection helps healthcare providers intervene promptly, offering more treatment options and improving long-term survival chances.

Cancer screening test accuracy varies by type and method. No test is completely accurate; false positives (showing cancer when there isn't any) and false negatives (missing cancer that's present) can happen.

Individuals without personal history of cancer.

Individuals with higher cancer risk due to lifestyle or family history of cancer.

For the 3 most common cancers:

Colorectal: For average-risk individuals, screening should begin at age 50 years.

Cervical: All women aged 25 years and above who have ever had sexual intercourse should do a pap smear at least once every 3 years.

Breast: Women at normal risk aged 40-49 years should do a screening mammogram annually. From age 50-69, it should be done once every 2 years.

The recommendations mentioned above are specifically for individuals with average risk and no symptoms. If you have additional risk factors, such as a family history, further tests may be advisable.
