Companions of Hypertension
Question:
I am diagnosed with hypertension. What is next for me? What are the consequences if my condition is left untreated?
Answer:
Once a diagnosis of hypertension is confirmed, it is essential to have regular follow up and be monitored by a doctor so that your blood pressure is well controlled. If left untreated for a long period of time, hypertension can lead to stroke, heart attack, kidney disease and blindness. Initially, if the hypertension is mild, lifestyle modifications may help manage the condition. These include weight loss, if one is overweight, exercise and a low salt, healthy diet. There are many classes of blood pressure lowering drugs which can be used safely and effectively on an individual basis. Again monitoring and follow up are required because these drugs should be regularly reviewed and adjusted if necessary by the attending doctor.
