Profile:
Dr Tan obtained her medical degree (MBBS) from the University of Adelaide in Australia, and her specialist medical degree, Master of Medicine (Psychiatry), from NUS. She is trained in adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, addiction psychiatry and forensic psychiatry. She is also well versed in psychological counselling. She is a Certified Substance Abuse Counsellor and Certified Gambling Addiction Counsellor.
Dr Tan was a recipient of MOH Health Manpower Development Plan scholarship and received subspecialty training in the area of addictive and impulse control disorders at Yale University in USA. She was formerly Deputy Chief of the Department of Addiction Medicine at IMH. Before joining Raffles Hospital, she ran her own private psychiatric practice. She has had the experience of running specialized clinics such as bipolar clinic, early psychosis clinic, child and adolescent clinic, addiction and adolescent addiction clinic. Dr Tan had also 3 years’ experience working in Australia, in the areas of general psychiatry, acute crisis intervention service, and veteran psychiatric unit (with high prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder). Dr Tan was a key member of the workgroup that developed the MOH Clinical Practice Guidelines on “Prescribing of Benzodiazepines” in 2008 and on “Management of Gambling Disorders” in 2011. She co-authored a book on gambling disorder in 2010. She has been a lecturer for the Diploma in Mental Health course since 2011.
